Why Hastings for business?

  • Margaret Sheehy, Director, MSL Projects.
I do not necessarily think that living in a small town is better than living in a city as I like cities and our company is based both in London and Hastings and in many ways for someone working in the creative and cultural sectors cities are better than small towns. Population wise Hastings is a small town, however, it's far cheaper than London, Brighton etc and you can get to all those bigger places relatively easily. There are also some very interesting and creative people here and because it's smaller than some places you can get to meet people, see their work and network effectively. It's also (reputedly) sunnier than other places which may be what encourages a spirit of optimism. Because of that and because you can see the sea you can pretend to be on holiday while you work.
  • Mike Sherwood, Managing Director, M-Connect Ltd
I have spent much of my career working for companies in or close to London. As someone who has always lived in Hastings, I faced long daily commutes either by road or rail. When I set up my own telecoms recruitment consultancy – M-Connect, it was an opportunity to work closer to home and take advantage of been located in Hastings. I’m based in the Creative Media Centre (CMC) which provides me with excellent office facilities at a reasonable price. In today’s internet age we can conduct much of our business by phone and email. When I do need to see clients I am walking distance away from the train station with direct links into London. Being located in Hastings has also allowed me to expand quicker and hire two new members of staff without having to pay London wages. The CMC has given us the flexibility to move offices as we grow. I would highly recommend Hastings and the CMC to any small business looking to move here.

Why bring your business to Hastings?

Hastings benefits from being located on the south coast and is about an hour away from Brighton & Hove to the west, which will be even quicker once the Bexhill link road is completed around 2016 and Ashford International and Dover to the East for connections to Europe. London is 60 miles away or 75 minutes via spacious, comfortable trains. You can read more about the transport links here.
Cost effective
Hastings and Rother has a dynamic and flexible workforce. Hastings benefits from one of the lowest costs of living in the region as well meaning that businesses can have an efficient and effective workforce for far less than other locations in the southeast.
Skilled labour market
Hastings and Rother already has well established manufacturing, administrative, creative and retail/leisure sectors and because of this training and professional development for any new business who are looking to attract staff will already have a local market of highly skilled workers who will help your business grow quicker.
Hastings is a great place to live. Hastings has in recent years become a hub for those looking to have a great work/life balance. Hastings has a vibrant and happy population and has a great community feel for a town of over 90,000. There's always something on and is great for families.
The future is bright
Hastings is developing fast and is a culmination of years of regeneration from a run down seaside resort to a vibrant and growing mixed economy. This is set to continue and only get better.
