In September 2016 the world renowned light artist Chris Levine came to Hastings to put on a spectacular laser show for the ROOT 1066 International Festival.

Hastings company Beaming went behind the scenes of Chris’s iy_Project show to discover how the installation was put together and what it was seeking to achieve.

Chris Levine, who previously collaborated with Kate Moss, Grace Jones and Massive Attack, is about to unveil his new work – a spectacular immersive sound and light installation which is set to become one of the iconic events that form the Root 1066 International Festival in Hastings, UK.

Created by laser artist Chris Levine, the iy_Project:The nature of sound and light will take place on Saturday 10 September on Hastings’ pier during the opening weekend of the arts festival celebrating 950 years since the Norman Conquest.

Canadian-born Levine will collaborate with renowned sound designer Marco Perry to create a spectacular experience that reflects our, now peaceful, connection to Normandy and our French neighbours. Simultaneously, lasers will be beamed across the channel towards St Valery – from where the Norman fleet set sail – in a symbolic invitation to our French neighbours to join in the celebrations and festivities.

Originating from the Eden Project’s first major outreach environmental arts project, iy_Project is a spectacular immersive light and sound installation staged at iconic events and destinations internationally. The installation can be experienced on an intimate level by just a handful of viewers, or by thousands of people simultaneously. iy_project comes fresh from headlining the prestigious Park Stage at Glastonbury (25 June) with Charlie Hazlewood and a 45 piece orchestra in Philip Glass’ Heroes Symphony in a special tribute to the life and work of David Bowie.

Chris first made his name as a light artist in 2004 when he famously created a holographic portrait of Her Majesty The Queen. He subsequently created laser-based images of Grace Jones, Kate Moss, the champion racehorse, Frankel and most recently the Dalai Lama on the occasion of his 80th birthday. He has also worked with Antony and The Johnsons, Paul Weller, Jon Hopkins and Massive Attack. In the case of the latter, Robert del Naja – AKA ‘3D’ – of the Bristol-based trip-hoppers said: “Chris is like an atom in an excited state – he is the true laser master”.

The ‘iy_project’ app will enhance the experience on the night. The app contains a game that users must complete within a set window of time during the event. Whoever wins the game will be gifted an original Chris Levine artwork signed by the artist. The free ‘iy_project’ app can be downloaded from iTunes.

Explaining the essential concept behind the iy_Project and his other work, Levine says: “My aim with iy_project is to work with the world’s top sound artists to harmonise sound and vision and create an experience that expands the narrow bandwidth of human perception. I want to draw us together in a meditative experience of wonder and communal celebration, leaving us more deeply connected to each other and the natural world around us. We are a part of nature, not apart from it.”

He does this by diffusing the light from high-powered lasers into geometric, wave and nebulae forms which interact in extraordinary ways with natural phenomena such as rain, mist, plants, trees and people, as well as architectural forms.

Polly Gifford, Root 1066 Festival Director says it will be an unforgettable experience “The festival is all about shining a light on both the heritage and contemporary culture of Hastings and 1066 Country and the iy_project will do that in a spectacular way from the fantastic location of Hastings’ newly reopened Pier.”

Hastings Pier have announced that pioneering UK Grime act Dizzee Rascal will be playing in Hastings for the first time ever on the Pier on September 16th to open the weekender that also sees Happy Mondays & Levellers performing.

With four number one singles, four top ten albums, a Mercury Prize, a performance at the Olympic opening ceremony in 2012 and collaborations with both Calvin Harris and DJ Fresh under his belt, Dizzee Rascal has become a key name in both the UK garage scene and the international pop market.

His live show has drawn crowds from all around the world, and after a run of festival performances this summer, the Hastings Pier show is sure to be an epic affair and if this alone isn’t enticing enough, the support bill for the Dizzee Rascal show is set to be equally as incredible and is scheduled to be announced soon.

Following Dizzee Rascal’s performance on Friday night, The Happy Mondays are set to perform ‘Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches’ in it’s entirety for it’s 25th anniversary on Saturday September 17th, plus a selection of greatest hits. Support on the night will come from The Orb performing ‘Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld’ in full, also for it’s 25th anniversary; and Formation, one of the most exciting new indie electronica acts of the moment.

Sunday 18th September will see Levellers perform ‘Levelling the Land’ for it’s 25th anniversary, plus a selection of greatest hits; with support from Turin Brakers who recently released their seventh album ‘Lost Property’; and the Nottingham folk-punk outfit Ferocious Dog.

For holiday makers at the moment it seems that more and more people are no longer booking a week in the sun and choosing to pack up their suitcases and come to Hastings and enjoy what our lovely local town has to offer. Hastings-1

With the weather slowly heating up and hopefully a lovely Summer on its way for Hastings, it seems that lots of tourists are visiting our local town.  Taking a stroll along the pier, visiting some of the restaurants and booking into hotels.  It seem’s that everyone wants to come and see what’s new or what’s going on at the moment, putting Hastings in the press once again and showing people how lovely it is to live here.

The Happy Monday’s and the Levellers will be performing on Hastings Pier in September and yesterday  One Inch Band announced that there would be a competition for local talent to join the line-up and support the iconic bands.

The winner of the competition will open the outdoor stage alongside the Happy Mondays, Levellers, The Orb, Turin Brakes, Formation and Ferocious Dog.

To submit an act, anyone can put their chosen artist forward.  The bands with the highest number of submissions for entry will be the winner (there will be a winner for each day) and only artists local to Hastings will be submitted.

Votes can be cast here.

Once a band reaches the top 10 in the vote, they will be contacted to let them know that they have been put forward.

This is a wonderful opportunity for aspiring musicians to be involved in the enrichment of the local music scene, and to leave their footprint on the vibrant musical history of Hastings.happy Mondays
