The local Growth Accelerator team, in partnership with Hastings Council, is inviting East Sussex’s most go-getting businesses to a breakfast briefing on Friday March 28th at the Sussex Exchange.

Looking to expand? The Growth Accelerator business breakfast will be a great event to be at.

Successful small businesses are often ‘Opportunity Rich’ but ‘Strategy Poor’ – run by talented owner-managers that are full of energy and ideas but lacking the time or experience to map out a pro-active growth strategy. This means that their growth potential is often limited.

The free breakfast briefing is aimed at all businesses who are determined to grow, with 5-249 employees and an annual turnover of less than £40 million so if you’re business fits this profile then this could be a good event to be at.

The briefing will help you step back and identify the specific obstacles that could be holding you back, then look at how Growth Accelerator, together with local Regional Growth Funds, can help you overcome them.

Priory Meadow has good reason to be celebrating today as its new anchor store from fashion giants H & M is opening on the 27th March 2014.

H & M is now open at Priory Meadow

The H & M Hastings store takes up quite a large space and is sure to attract more visitors to the town and being an anchor store will, we presume attract more brands to the shopping centre and rightfully so.

All jobs have currently been filled when we enquired earlier in the month, however it is always worth checking on H & M’s website for any opportunities.

The University of Sussex has developed a fully funded undergraduate internship programme for 2nd year First-Generation Scholars.

First-Generation Scholars are current undergraduate students at the University of Sussex, who are either the first in their family to go to University, or have a family income of less than £42,611 per annum.

Looking for an intern? Get a fully funded one this summer via the University of Sussex.

The University is inviting potential internship providers to express interest in receiving £3000 funding to offer a 2nd year First-Generation Scholar a 10-week internship opportunity during summer 2014. Internships should start during week commencing 16 June 2014.

Internship providers will be asked to pay interns a minimum of £7.65 per hour (the UK Living Wage, organisations based in London are encouraged to top this up to £8.80 per hour). Interns will be expected to work 37.5 hours per week for 10 weeks.

The official launch takes place on Monday 24th March at 11am at the Avanta offices at 6 Bank Buildings Hastings.

Hundreds of jobseekers flocked to the Sussex Coast College on Friday March 14th for Amber Rudd’s third Hastings jobs fair.

There were over 500 jobs on offer in sectors ranging from health and social care, the armed forces, retail, to hairdressing and banking, as well as a wide range of training opportunities.

“There were fantastic opportunities available at the Hastings jobs fair and a great buzz of enthusiasm and excitement at the College for my Jobsfair,” said Amber, “Lots of local people met some of our best employers and told me how excited they were by the variety of companies there.  I am so grateful that so many companies supported the day.”

Companies such as Sainsbury’s, Hastings Direct, Aldi and Lloyds Bank were all recruiting on the day from the steady stream of jobseekers who attended. People of all ages were there, eager to talk to the companies and attend the mock interviews, getting advice and finding out about the jobs and apprenticeships on offer.  “I conducted one of the mock interviews myself,” said Amber, ” as I know from my experience in recruitment how important it is to get good practice before the real thing.  I am really grateful to Dave Hinton from Hastings Works for running the sessions.”

The feedback from businesses and companies exhibiting was incredibly positive: 35 jobs were pledged to Avanta and the Federation of Small Businesses and Azure Marina arranged 70 interviews and will be following up with a further 80 job seekers.

Amber commented “I am pleased that so many people were there to make the most of everything. There were some great success stories with huge numbers of people getting interviews and lots of people commenting on how useful they found the advice on offer.”

“Supporting local businesses and helping people find jobs are major priorities for me as an MP, the jobs fair was a great opportunity to do both of these things. I hope that everyone who attended the Fair was able to find something they needed.”

The Chancellor, George Osbourne has today announced his budget for the next year. It seems fair to say that the 2014 UK budget is pro-business which is great news for all of us especially as the UK is predicted to overtake the pre-crisis peak which we’ll potentially see happen by the summer and this budget seems to be here to help businesses grow.

Here’s a highlight of the 2014 UK Budget things that matter to businesses:

Is your business better off after the budget?

  • Export lead business in the area will be happy as the government announces a new scheme to boost exports by doubling finance availability to £3bn.
  • Any business that uses vehicles be it individually or a fleet will be pleased to hear that £200bn has been earmarked for pothole repair and the proposed rise in fuel duty in September 2014 has been scrapped.
  • If you are a high earner the the higher rate of income tax threshold will rise from £41,450 to £41,865 from next month. It will then rise by a further 1% to £42,285 next year.
  • Everyone’s tax free allowance will rise £500 to £10,500.
  • Businesses in the Pub/leisure sector will not see a rise in Whiskey or Cider duty. Beer duty, however, will be cut by a penny a pint. Tobacco is going up by 2%
  • There will also be a £7bn package to cut energy bills including £18 per ton cap on carbon price support. Medium-sized manufacturers can expect to save £50,000 from this according to the Chancellor.

Obviously there are quite a few more points to the 2014 UK budget that may affect you personally but these are the key ones for business.

This is a quick reminder to those that are looking for work that the annual Hastings Jobs Fair is on Friday 14th March in the main atrium of Sussex Coast College.

If you are a business that is considering using the Fair in 2015 then it will also be good to pop in and see if its for you too. With last years event attracting over 600 people on the day and over 20 jobs offered that day as well it is a great way for businesses and jobseekers to talk to each other.

Sussex Coast College Hastings has been graded a ‘good with outstanding features’ in a ringing endorsement from Ofsted, just 793 days after being branded ‘inadequate’.

Following an inspection, which took place in November 2011, the College was deemed ‘inadequate’ by the education watchdog, with a grade 4 rating. A re-inspection in 2013 pointed towards significant improvements in literacy, numeracy, IT and retention, with the College being told they had made a ‘remarkable turnaround.’ This week’s inspection confirmed major and sustained improvements across teaching standards, student success rates and retention.

The Ofsted inspection, allows just three days’ notice before examining college management, finances and learning / teaching, with spontaneous class visits and a thorough review of the College’s systems and processes.

The full report, which was released on March 7th, praised the College for its exceptional change. Some highlights in the report included ‘teaching, learning and assessment are good which reflects the strongly improving success rates over the past few years.’

Ofsted continued to say ‘Outstanding senior leaders and managers have focused relentlessly and successfully on improving the learning experience for all students and apprentices.’

In one of the outstanding areas, Ofsted commented ‘teaching, learning and assessment are outstanding, reflecting the particularly high success rates in 2012/13 and sustained improvement over the previous few years. Attendance, punctuality and behaviour are excellent. Progression to higher education, employment and to further studies at the College is good overall.’

Principal, Clive Cooke said ‘I am delighted. My colleagues have worked incredibly hard to turn around the College, and it is wonderful that it has been formally recognised. It doesn’t stop here though – we are aiming to be outstanding overall next time. Sussex Coast College is well on its way to becoming the outstanding College Hastings and Rother deserves.’

Tony Campbell OBE KSG FRSA, Chairman of the College’s Board of Governors expressed his thanks to all members of the Corporation, the Principal and Senior Leadership Team, the staff, and students, for their tremendous efforts over the past two years. He further stated ‘The College has emerged from a difficult period, with inspirational new facilities, an outstanding leadership team and exceptional teaching staff. Students here now and in the future can expect an inspiring educational experience.’

Amber Rudd MP, said, ‘I am delighted for everyone at Sussex Coast College and have seen first-hand the sterling work being done there.  The College has become a fantastic asset for the continued regeneration of the town and a beacon for learning for local residents.  This Ofsted report is a testament to the hard work and dedication shown by the Principal, Clive Cooke, and his team.’

Saffron Peterson, a sixth form student, at the College, said ‘I have been studying A Levels at Sussex Coast College for over a year now and love everything about it. The staff are a great support and the facilities are wonderful.’

The student experience was reflected in the report, with Ofsted commenting ‘students are at the heart of the College, typified by the ‘Student First’ approach, and understand that their voice has real value and that their opinions have an impact.’
